Home Insurance and Glassware
Tue 26th Jul 2011
Home insurance can protect your delicate and valuable glassware against theft or damage. Whether you chose standard home insurance or specialist home insurance with more extensive cover you should ensure that your glassware is fully protected.
Glassware is usually protected against theft and damage up to the value stated in your schedule. You should be aware however, that if you're moving house, china, glass, porcelain or any other items of delicate earthenware are only insured against damage if they are packed by professional removal contractors.
Ornaments and glassware are particularly at risk of breakage in the home. These delicate items are often valuable or have greater emotional worth than other items in your home, and they therefore deserve special care and attention. Glassware you might want to insure with home insurance includes glass vases, statues, plates, decorative items, or special wine or spirit glasses. Whether you store your glass items away or have them on display for regular use, your delicate glass items could still be at risk from theft or damage. It only takes one curious cat, a slightly enthusiastic child, or an accident-prone adult to cause a breakage to your precious delicate items.
You can reduce the risk of damage by always handling your glassware with care. Particular care should be taken whilst cleaning your glassware, as it can be easily dropped or chipped whilst you are cleaning it. You may want to wear special cleaning gloves which offer extra grip and keep the glass free of fingerprints. You should also clean delicate items over a table, with a piece of material laid down for padding in case you accidentally drop it.
When not in use, glassware and delicate items should be stored on a stable surface, preferably locked away and out of reach from children or accidents. You can also keep your glassware on small pieces of felt or lace doyleys to make the surface more stable and reduce the risk of slippage.
It's not just valuable homeware that can be covered by household insurance; glass in your home may also be covered. You should check the details of your home insurance policy to confirm that accidental breakage of glass sections in tables, windows, mirrors and glass hob covers are also covered by the glass section of your home insurance policy.
